Week 03 - Unit 401 Effective Communication in Business (K)

Duration 4 Weeks (2 days in academy)
Assignment Start TAM:    17/10/14    BHAM:    20/10/14
Assignment End See details here.

In unit 401 you will be reintroduced to the concepts of communication in a business context. We will need to investigate the theory behind communication, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of communication backed by research evidence.

An example of this would be assessment criteria 4.1:

4.1    Explain how to recognise and respond to different body language in business environments.

Body language refers to the nonverbal signals that we use to communicate (Cherry 2014).Body language conveys a large amount of the information that we are trying to communicate on conscious and unconscious levels.

We need to explore this as it has a large impact on the success or failure of communication in an organisation. For example, imagine we were about to close a big sale with a client. This client does not speak english as their first language. We are in a face to face meeting and as we close the deal we make a light hearted joke such as "when you sign on the dotted line  I will own all of your stuff! How could this be interpreted? How would it be different if we were communicating on the phone instead of face to face?

In Amy Cuddy's TED talk below we identify examples of body language and consider its effect on wider communication (Cuddy, 2012).
